The club sponsors a speaker during United Nations
week, October 20-26, in order to educate the student body about
the United Nations and its diverse political, cultural and social
roles. The week is celebrated in all states, and by eighty-one
UN member states.
The culmination of Roanoke College’s Model United Nations organization
is a trip to New York City for the annual National
Model United Nations (NMUN) conference. The college delegation represents
a specific member state of the United Nations. In 2003, Roanoke College represented
Botswana. Botswana is on several committees, including the General Assembly,
UNCTAD, G77, Economic Commission on Africa (ECA), Crime Congress and Special
Session on Children. The experience provided the delegates with the knowledge
of how the UN functions and the frustrations of conflict resolution in an international
body made of sovereign states. |
